Giving Thanks for Widow's Roof Being Completed

Dear Friends and Supporters:
A number of weeks ago I put out a plea for the funds to complete a widow's roof that was in very bad need of being replaced. This need had been unmet for way too long, but we just could not seem to be able to find the means to finish. Finally, I put out a plea on our e-mail mailing list and asked for prayer as well as anyone that might be able to contribute to this need. In less than a week committments were made to pay for all of the material costs involved with getting this job done.

A number of different groups helped Dick Mason, our widows construction projects director, to tear off the old roofing, repair and replace rotten and damaged decking and then re-shingle it. The first group to provide assistance was a group of youth and adults from Hixson United Methodist Church on September 22 (sorry i don't have pictures from that work day). Then students from Chattanooga Christian School's Community Service class came out and helped for a day.

Less than a week after CCS students came out to help Dick, Common Ground Christian Ministries (based in Indiana) held an 8 day festival/conference in town at the Chattanooga Convention and trade center. Their leader, Guy Swenson, had contacted us some weeks before about any opportunities that we might have for them to serve in the community while they were here. Praise God, they were able to come out with enough folks to finish what remained to be done on this roof and by days end, except for the clean up, the roof was completed. Praise God! While this work team was finishing up this roof they also had another work team pressure washing and scraping another widow's house.

During the same week that CGC Ministries volunteered with us a group of senior's from Silverdale Baptist Church, led by Eddie Wilson (one of their pastors), did house cleaning and visitation with a number of widows, most of whom are a part of our weekly widow's prayer ministry. This group also joined with our widows for their prayer time. Unfortuantely, I was only able to get pictures of them working at one of the several widows they served during that week.

Covenant College Students spend their Saturday helping finish the widow's roof that
many of our friends and supporters generously gave to buy the materials for. I had a
chance to spend some time with her and meet her teenage son after i took these pictures and found
myself almost in tears before i left. Her troubles are so many and yet her thanksgiving is so great. Even though I somehow managed to leave dry eyed that was not the case for her. As I left her she was sobbing and thanking Jesus and her tears were both of joy and sadness.

Blessings and Thanksgiving,

andy mendonsa
